Machu Picchu, the jewel of Peruvian tourism, remains a globally renowned destination, welcoming over a million visitors each year. To ensure its preservation and enhance the experience of those who visit, the Ministry of Culture has reinforced its regulations in 2025, implementing stricter measures and optimizing access to the Incan citadel.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu faces the challenge of increasing tourism. In response, the Ministry of Culture has modernized its ticket sales system, implemented stricter visitor controls, and established specific circuits with designated routes. Currently, there are five main circuits, although new routes may be introduced in the future to better distribute tourists within the archaeological site.
Regulations and Ticket Purchase
To access Machu Picchu, visitors must purchase tickets in advance, as the number of daily entries is limited to 4,570. Additionally, the Ministry of Culture has made 1,000 extra tickets available for purchase in Aguas Calientes, but only in person and with an original passport—these tickets cannot be bought through travel agencies or tour operators.
The circuits have been redesigned to optimize visitor flow and reduce the impact on archaeological structures. Starting in 2025, entrance tickets are organized into three new circuits, each with specific routes for exploring the Incan citadel. Failure to follow the established rules may result in expulsion from the site, applying to both visitors and tour guides.
