Tourists arriving in Cusco by plane are most prone to suffer from altitude sickness, more commonly known as soroche. It also happens to us Cusqueños when we leave for a while. And when we return, we feel somewhat dizzy (it is the change in climate).

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ALTITUDE SICKNESS

- Upon your arrival in Cusco, rest and avoid physical exertion.
- Eat light meals and avoid heavy foods. Preferably consume easily digestible foods.
- Stay constantly hydrated, at least 2 to 3 liters of water per day, as altitude can cause dehydration.
- Avoid tranquilizers or sleeping pills, as these can worsen altitude sickness symptoms.
- Hot coca tea is one of the best natural remedies to combat altitude sickness. It is not recommended to drink it before going to bed as you will not be able to sleep, since this plant contains alkaloids that act as an energizer.
- Muña tea is another highly recommended natural remedy to combat altitude sickness.

- You can chew it and swallow the juice but not the coca leaves; you must discard them after they become small.
- Almost 100% of accommodations in Cusco will offer you free coca tea as it is a very good remedy for this altitude sickness.
