COCALMAYO: A THERMAL PARADISE ON THE WAY TO MACHU PICCHU

When people think of Machu Picchu, the first things that come to mind are the ruins, the history, and the epic hikes. But just a few kilometers from the famous sanctuary, there’s a magical place where nature embraces you with warm waters: the Cocalmayo Hot Springs in Santa Teresa, a hidden gem of the Sacred Valley. It’s the perfect spot to recharge your energy before or after visiting the Inca citadel.

What Are the Cocalmayo Hot Springs?

Located at 1,600 meters (5,250 feet) above sea level, the Cocalmayo Hot Springs consist of three large open-air pools fed by underground volcanic springs. Each pool has a different temperature, ranging from 38°C to 44°C (100°F to 111°F), making them perfect for relaxing your muscles, improving circulation, and relieving stress.

Unlike other hot springs, the waters at Cocalmayo are crystal clear, odorless (no sulfur smell), and surrounded by lush mountain vegetation, birdsong, and a stunning view of the Urubamba River.

A one-of-a-kind natural setting:

Cocalmayo sits between the Andean mountain range and the high jungle of Cusco, creating a warm and humid microclimate. It’s the ideal place to unwind after challenging treks like the Salkantay Trek or Inca Jungle Trail or simply as a peaceful escape from Santa Teresa or the Hydroelectric Station (Hidroeléctrica).

From the pools, you can spot waterfalls, wild orchids, and, depending on the season, even butterflies and hummingbirds fluttering around. It’s the perfect spot to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature.

Services at Cocalmayo

The complex offers:

  • Nighttime lighting (open until 10:00 p.m.)
  • Clean restrooms and changing rooms
  • Cold showers
  • Lockers (available for rent at an affordable price)
  • Rest areas and viewing points
  • Shops and food stalls offering basic snacks
  • Mototaxi service from Santa Teresa

When to Visit?

You can visit Cocalmayo year-round, but the dry season (from May to October) is ideal for clear skies and better trail conditions. If you go during the rainy season, the landscape is more vibrant and green, but it’s recommended to take precautions due to mud or possible river floods.

Helpful Tips:

  • Bring your swimsuit, towel, sandals, and a change of dry clothes.
  • It’s advisable to go early in the morning or at sunset to avoid crowds.
  • Don’t forget your insect repellent, as it’s a tropical area.
  • The entrance fee is affordable, and there are restrooms, showers, and areas to relax.
