Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire, is a vibrant city full of traditions and celebrations that keep its cultural roots alive. Throughout the year, various festivities bring Cusqueños and visitors together in events filled with color, music, and spirituality. From the grand Inti Raymi to religious festivities and carnivals, here are the most important celebrations you can’t miss.

1. Inti Raymi: The Festival of the Sun (June 24th)

Inti Raymi is the most emblematic festival in Cusco and one of the most important in South America. It is celebrated every June 24th in honor of the sun god, Inti, marking the beginning of the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere.

How is it celebrated?

The festivities begin at the Temple of Qorikancha, where offerings and rituals take place.

The ceremony then continues in Plaza de Armas, where ancient Inca traditions are reenacted.

The main event takes place at the impressive Sacsayhuamán fortress, featuring a theatrical representation of the Inca ritual, folk dances, and a grand performance with hundreds of actors.

How to experience it?

To enjoy Inti Raymi, it is recommended to:

  • Book tickets in advance, as demand is high.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and bring sun protection.
  • Explore the historical background with a guided tour.

2. Holy Week in Cusco (March or April)

Holy Week is one of Cusco’s most important religious festivities, blending Catholic traditions with Andean elements.

Main events:

Holy Monday: Procession of the Lord of the Earthquakes, Cusco’s patron saint, whose image is carried through the city’s streets as devotees throw ñucchu flowers, a traditional red flower.

Holy Thursday and Good Friday: Masses and visits to the seven colonial churches in the historic center.

Easter Sunday: The festivities conclude with a solemn mass at Cusco Cathedral.
